Ercilia Cepeda created this piece during her last residency with us. In this new series she plays with the tension between ancient symbols and the everyday language of Tulum. The jaguar stands as a quiet guardian from the pre Hispanic past while its body carries small marks of the present tattoos pop icons and little moments that already feel part of life in the Caribbean.

Ercilia is not judging anything. She is observing. She mixes humor tenderness and a sharp eye to show how the old and the new live together here. The result feels playful and strangely honest a portrait of a place that keeps shifting and reinventing itself.

A piece for collectors who appreciate art with layers a story you keep discovering each time you look at it.

Ercilia Cepeda

Through her work Ercilia Cepeda reveals her vocation to dialectically express the truth and the creative talent to be found in the unconscious, as well as the lies. These paintings represent a record of her journey through her own psyche during which we are presented with moments of intense anguish and pain with no hint of pleasure, moments of loneliness with no hint of redemption, and an introspection that allows no concessions. The iconography and the titles of her work contain constant religion.
